Background of the Study

Cultural beliefs significantly influence individuals’ health behaviors, including the decisions to seek treatment for mental health conditions. In many African societies, including Nigeria, mental health disorders are often viewed through cultural lenses that may attribute the causes of mental illness to supernatural forces, spiritual punishments, or societal stigmas (Eze & Okafor, 2024). These beliefs can influence individuals' willingness to seek formal psychiatric care and may lead them to seek traditional healing methods or avoid seeking help altogether.

Kano State, with its rich cultural heritage and predominantly Muslim population, presents a unique context for exploring the influence of cultural beliefs on mental health treatment-seeking behaviors. Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Kano is one of the primary facilities where individuals with mental health disorders are treated. However, cultural norms and misconceptions about mental illness may hinder effective care, contributing to delays in seeking treatment and increased severity of conditions. Understanding the cultural factors that influence mental health treatment-seeking behavior in this setting is essential for improving mental health care access and outcomes (Umar & Sulaimon, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

In Kano State, cultural beliefs often present barriers to the utilization of mental health services at institutions like the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital. The stigma surrounding mental illness and the preference for traditional healers may prevent patients from seeking psychiatric care in a timely manner, leading to worsened outcomes. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which cultural beliefs influence mental health treatment-seeking behavior and how these beliefs affect the utilization of psychiatric services in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the impact of cultural beliefs on mental health treatment-seeking behavior among residents of Kano State.

2. To evaluate the role of stigma in delaying treatment-seeking for mental health disorders.

3. To assess the influence of traditional healing practices on the decision to seek psychiatric care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kano.

Research Questions

1. How do cultural beliefs influence mental health treatment-seeking behavior in Kano State?

2. What role does stigma play in the delay of mental health treatment-seeking?

3. How do traditional healing practices affect decisions to seek psychiatric care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kano?

Research Hypotheses

1. Cultural beliefs significantly influence mental health treatment-seeking behavior in Kano State.

2. Stigma related to mental illness delays the decision to seek psychiatric care.

3. The use of traditional healing practices negatively impacts the decision to seek formal psychiatric treatment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on patients seeking care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kano, from 2023 to 2025. Interviews and surveys will be used to collect data. The limitations of the study include potential biases in respondents' answers due to cultural sensitivities and the challenges of distinguishing between cultural beliefs and other factors influencing treatment-seeking behavior.
